Hello! My name is, well, never mind.

I live in the UK and I'm one of those people who makes a living teaching computers how to do things.

I work predominantly with XMPP, an open standard protocol for exchanging packets of XML, most popularly used to power instant messaging servers such as jabber.org, Google Talk and Facebook. As of September 2009 I am serving on the XMPP Standards Foundation council, approving new specifications for acceptance and existing specifications for advancement to â…

Verse is a Jabber/XMPP library for Lua. It is suited to both high-level (eg. publishing PEP nodes) and low-level (ie. manually crafting stanzas) use.

Finally rapid XMPP development is now a piece of cake. Currently it works on Linux, there is no reason it shouldn't work on Windows too, I just don't have any incentive to boot into Windows and compile it there. Please contact me if you're willing to provide a Windows build :-)

Hi! I hope you enjoyed my talk - at least it seems it got you curious to learn more about Lua. You can find my slides here, and below are a number of links that are the most valuable to anyone wanting to explore the hows or whys of Lua for the first time.

You may notice that I say that much of what I produce is free. I mean not just “free” in the sense of “no cost”, but also that of freedom - I distribute code with minimal licences that try not to restrict how you use it.

You may ask why. I believe that producing code and publishing it openly helps others as much as it helps me. I am able to receive feedback (both thanks and criticism, which I enjoy in equal measure), and also contributions from people who wish to build upon my work. It …
